Ensuring you have a safe display

At Panther Fireworks take every care to ensure you have the right guidance to set up your own firework display. We have put together some useful information that we recommend you read through before you create your own firework display.

A recommended read is the HSE Giving Your Own Firework Display Book. A downloadable PDF version is available below:

Firework Safety Checklist

We suggest you follow the steps listed below to ensure you have a safe and enjoyable firework display.

Before your firework display

  • Buy from a reputable brand of fireworks from a retailer that you trust
  • Only buy fireworks marked BS 7114 (This proves that the firework complies with the strict British Standard and is not an illegal imported firework)

Things you will need on the night

  • A closed metal box to store the fireworks – take them out one at a time
  • Follow the instructions on each firework – read them by torchlight, never by a naked flame
  • A bucket of water to extinguish sparklers
  • Eye protection and gloves
  • Ensure you have a bucket of sand, or earth to embed the fireworks to the “bury to line” instructions on fireworks such as Cakes and Single Ignitions
  • Find a suitable post for securing Catherine wheels

Lighting fireworks

  • Only one person should be responsible for letting off fireworks
  • Don’t drink alcohol if you are setting off fireworks
  • Light fireworks at arm’s length, using a taper
  • Make sure everyone stands well back watching the fireworks (Spectator distances are provided on each firework)
  • Never go back to a firework that has been lit – even if it hasn’t gone off it could still explode!

Sparklers

  • Supervise children with sparklers and never give them to a child under five
  • Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves
  • Put used sparklers hot end down into a bucket of sand or water
